Johnny Cash On The Barge; Hugh MacMillan Warned Me About Mold

Johnny Cash,  June Carter  Tammy Wynette Tribute
Music on the Barge – Gull Lake Rotary Park – Gravenhurst

The music of Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette will be celebrated on Sunday, August 11th commencing at 7:30 p.m. at “Music on the Barge” Gull Lake Rotary Park, Gravenhurst
These unique musical pairing stars Jim Yorfido who is currently receiving rave reviews across Canada for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in “The Sun Records Story”, the official touring show of the famed record label from Memphis, Tennessee.  At the “Music on the Barge” performance, Yorfido will be covering music from the entire and extensive career of Johnny Chas including the early hits such as “I Walk the Line” Folsom Prison Blues” to other chart –toppers such as “Boy Named Sue”” Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “Ring of Fire”.
Joining Jim Yorfido will be Jim’s real-life wife Pam Yorfido, who portrays country music legend Tammy Wynette.  Best known for her hits, “Stand by Your Man” and the classic D-I-V-O-R-C-E.  Pam also joins Johnny Cash to perform some duets including the show-stopping “Jackson” and “It Ain’t Me Bebe” amongst other fun tines.  In addition to recreating the vocal style of Tammy Wynette, Pam Yorfido has “gone the extra mile” in the wardrobe department and wear dresses from Wynette’s actual personal wardrobe in the show.  Pam proudly notes “It’s an honour to keep singing these songs and preserving the Tammy Wynette legend with integrity.”
Vocally, James Yorfido’s striking Baritone voice is a rarity amongst Cash performers.  He actually has the exact same vocal range as “The Man in Black” himself!
Musically, his three-piece backing band truly captures the CASH sound with unmatched authenticity” upright “slap” bass, note for note guitar licks, count for count drum beats, all performed on expensive, vintage instruments and equipment.
In addition to capturing the “Cash sound”, James Yorfido successfully re-creates the distinctive look of “The Man in Black” with meticulous attention paid to every detail of the Cash wardrobe.
Of course, Johnny is joined on stage by the colourful June Carter-Cash, portrayed by James’s real-life wife Pam Yorfido, who look, talent, experience and professionalism is a perfect match for this top calbre show.

PAPER SLEUTHING CAN BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH

I REMEMBER TALKING WITH FAMED ARCHIVIST / HISTORIAN, HUGH MACMILLAN, ABOUT THE TERRIBLE QUAGMIRES OF OLD PAPER, HE HAD GOT HIMSELF BURIED IN, OVER HIS MANY DECADES HUNTING FOR HISTORIC DOCUMENTS, LETTERS AND JOURNALS, OF PROMINENT CANADIANS. I UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, BECAUSE I HAD ENDURED MANY OF THE SAME EXPERIENCES, AND FOUND MYSELF WITH DISORDERS OF THE LUNGS FOR WEEKS AFTERWARDS. IT'S LIKELY THE MOLDS WE WERE ENCOUNTERING, IN ALL SHADES OF THE RAINBOW, DID CAUSE SOME UNKNOWN CONSEQUENCES TO OUR BODILY HEALTH. I KNOW THAT SOME OF THE LAST MEMORABLE DISCUSSIONS, WITH HUGH, BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY, WERE ABOUT WHAT ARCHIVISTS HAVE TO DEAL WITH, ON A ROUTINE BASIS, WITH PAPER ACQUISITIONS, AND THE CONTAMINATION THEY CAN SHED WHEN PROCESSED AND CONSERVED. WHICH WAS HIS BUSINESS FOR A LONG TIME. HE HAD READ SOMETHING ABOUT DANGERS TO THE HEART FROM CERTAIN MOLD-TYPES, HE WAS SURE HE HAD COME IN CONTACT WITH DURING HIS INTENSIVE SLEUTHING WORK.
FOR THE PAST WEEK, I'VE BEEN DOING THE SAME THING, BUT THIS TIME, I DID THINK ABOUT HUGH, AND OUR DISCUSSIONS, AS I WAS TRYING TO WIPE AWAY BLACK MOLD WITH YELLOW AND ORANGE AROUND THE EDGES. THE WORK I WAS TRYING TO SAVE WAS WORTH IT, ALL RIGHT, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE ME RISK LIFE AND LIMB TRYING TO SAVE EVERY PIECE OF PAPER. THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS IN THE CARDBOARD BOXES, FORTUNATELY, WERE IN BETTER CONDITION, AS THE CONTENTS HAD BEEN MIXED TOGETHER BY THE ESTATE, MEANING THE CONTAMINATED PAGES WERE FROM ANOTHER BOX. FORTUNATELY, THEY WERE DUMPED-IN ON TOP OF THE OTHER PAPER, AND SEEING AS THEY WERE ONLY THERE FOR A SHORT PERIOD, I WAS ABLE TO SAVE WHAT WAS FILED ON THE BOTTOM. I'M SURE I GOT HIT BY SOME INVISIBLE PARTICLES BECAUSE I'VE BEEN SNIFFLING EVER SINCE. THIS WAS BETTER THAN WHAT WE USUALLY FACE, AS PAPER SLEUTHS, BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME, ALL OF THE PAPER, EVEN WHAT APPEARS CLEAN, HAS SOME FORM OF CONTAMINATION. I HAVE SAVED AND CONSERVED FAR MORE OLD PAPER THAN I'VE HAD TO DISPOSE OF, BUT IT'S ALWAYS TOUGH FOR AN HISTORIAN TO GIVE-UP ON SOMETHING THAT MAY HAVE BEEN WRITTEN, AS A PERSONAL LETTER, BACK IN THE 1860'S, AS MAILED FROM ENGLAND, TO FAMILY ON A MUSKOKA HOMESTEAD. SO WHAT I DO, PRIOR TO GETTING RID OF THE ROTTING PAPER, IS TO TRANSCRIBE THE INFORMATION INTO A BOOKLET, AND THEN, IF IT IS IMPORTANT TO THE REGION, I WILL PUBLISH IT ON MY BLOG-SITE, TO MAKE SURE IT STAYS AROUND A LITTLE BIT LONGER.
HUGH MACMILLAN WOULD GO INTO HALF-FALLEN SHEDS AND BARNS, TRUNKS IN ATTICS AND BASEMENTS, TO RETRIEVE IMPORTANT PERSONAL PAPERS, FROM INDIVIDUALS AND ESTATES, WHO PLAYED A ROLE IN THE HISTORIC EVENTS OF OUR PROVINCE AND NATION. HE PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WEARING A SPECIAL SUIT AND A BREATHING APPARATUS, BUT FEW KNEW THEN JUST HOW MOLD SPORES IMPACTED ON THE BODY…….VIA ATMOSPHERIC INFLUENCES. I PROBABLY HAVEN'T BEEN AS HEAVILY EXPOSED, AS HUGH WAS, IN HIS ARCHIVES WORK, BUT I REMEMBER HIM WARNING ME, BASED ON HIS MALADIES, TO USE GREATER CARE AROUND SUCH MOLDS; THAT USUALLY DISLODGE IN PART, WHEN THE PAPER IS SHIFTED, AND INEVITABLY, IT IS INHALED BY THE UNSUSPECTING INVESTIGATOR.
I WAS WORKING IN BOTH A COTTAGE ATTIC AND BASEMENT, RETRIEVING ARTIFACTS, PAPER AND ANYTHING ELSE OF ANTIQUE INTEREST, WHERE BATS INHABITED THE SAME SPACE. I DIDN'T GET BITTEN BUT WHATEVER I INHALED IN BOTH AREAS, GAVE ME A HACKING COUGH FOR SIX MONTHS. YOU'D THINK THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE KIND OF WAKE-UP EVENT, THAT WOULD HAVE INFLUENCED ME TO USE A MASK ON FUTURE HUNT AND GATHER MISSIONS, UNDER SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES OF CONTAMINATION. EVEN TODAY, WHEN HANDED A BOX OF OLD PAPER, FROM AN ESTATE, MY HEAD IS DEEP INSIDE BEFORE I'VE EVEN CHECKED FOR THE PRESENCE OF MOLD. THIS WEEK, FOR EXAMPLE, I WAS ASKED TO GO THROUGH TWO HUGE BOXES OF EPHEMERA (PAPER) FROM A LOCAL ESTATE. I GOT SO CARRIED AWAY, I HAD TO ASK SUZANNE FOR HELP, AND AFTERE A HALF HOUR, WE WERE BOTH SNIFFING, SNEEZING AND COUGHING. YET FOR THE MOST PART, THERE WAS NO VISIBLE MOLD IN THIS BETTER KEPT BOXES OF PERSONAL PAPERS. WHEN YOU START MAKING BIG FINDS, WELL SIR, CAUTION GETS TOSSED ASIDE. IT IS, I IMAGINE, WHAT KING TUT'S CURSE WAS ALL ABOUT……WHEN A LOT OF INTREPID MUMMY HUNTERS, UNCOVERED HIS TOMB, AND ENTERED WITH RECKLESS ABANDON, TO SCOOP UP THE LOOT OFFERED AS A MEMORIAL TO THE LATE KING. IT IS THOUGHT BY SOME AUTHORITIES, THAT THE FOOD MATERIALS WHICH HAD BEEN PROVIDED, AS PART OF THE MEMORIAL TRIBUTE, CREATED A STILL ACTIVE MOLD THAT MAY HAVE CONTAMINATED THE AIR IN THE CLOSED AREA WHERE THE BODY WAS STORED. ALL THESE YEARS LATER, YOU'D THINK WE WOULD HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE DANGERS OF AIRBORNE CONTAMINATION. A LOT OF FOLKS DIED FROM THAT APPARENT CONTAMINATION, WHICH WAS REFERRED TO AS KING TUT'S "CURSE."
I WAS THINKING ABOUT HUGH LAST EVENING, WHEN I WAS WORKING IN A STORAGE ROOM JAMMED WITH THIS AND THAT, FROM BOTH FAMILY ESTATES, THAT WE CAN'T PART WITH JUST AT THIS MOMENT. SUZANNE WAS BAKING COOKIES FOR THE STORE, AS OUR SATURDAY MORNING CUSTOMERS SEEM TO DEPEND ON THE TREATS SHE PREPARES EACH FRIDAY NIGHT, AND I DECIDED TO DO SOME SORTING IN THE SHED. WELL AS I HAVE DONE A THOUSAND TIMES BEFORE, I INADVERTENTLY BLOCKED MY EXIT IN THE FIRST TEN MINUTES OF SHIFTING THINGS, FROM ONE SIDE OF THE ROOM TO THE OTHER. IT'S GOOD THERE WASN'T AN EMERGENCY, BECAUSE IT TOOK ME ALMOST AN HOUR TO ATTRACT SUZANNE'S ATTENTION, TO MOUNT A RESCUE. NOW WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS, AS ARCHIVISTS MIGHT FIND IT REMINISCENT OF THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES, WE HAD A COINCIDENCE AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME, WHEN IT CAME TO BRINGING AN OLD PIANO BENCH BACK INTO THE ROOM.
SUZANNE STOPPED ON HER END, REFUSING TO STEP FORWARD, UNTIL I IDENTIFIED WHO HAD MADE THE BENCH. IT'S ONE OF THOSE SPOUSAL Q & A'S YOU DON'T WANT TO SCREW UP, JUST LIKE GETTING THE DATE OF YOUR WEDDING MIXED UP WITH PLANNING FOR THE ANNUAL NEIGHBORHOOD GOLF TOURNAMENT. SHE LIKES TO TEST MY HISTORIAN'S RECALL. "YOUR FATHER BUILT IT WITH HELP FROM HIS FRIEND NELSON GOLTZ," I SHOT BACK, AS I HAD TO SET MY END DOWN, BECAUSE THE CONTENTS WERE STARTING TO SPILL OUT ON THE FLOOR. NORM STRIPP, SUZANNE'S FATHER, WAS A WOODEN BOAT REFINISHER, OF THE HIGHEST STANDING, AND NELSON GOLTZ, HAD BEEN ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN BUILDERS IN THE DISTRICT OF MUSKOKA. THE TWO GENTS HAD CONSIDERED, AT ONE TIME, MANUFACTURING HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE AS A FLEDGLING INDUSTRY. IT NEVER TOOK OFF, BUT BY GOLLY, THIS PIANO BENCH HAS HAD A LOT OF WEAR AND TEAR OVER SIXTY ODD YEARS OF ITS EXISTENCE…..AND IT'S STILL LOOKING PRETTY GOOD WHEN SITTING UPRIGHT AS IT SHOULD. BUT JUST AS SUZANNE WAS EXPLAINING THE FINER DETAILS OF THEIR PARTNERSHIP BACK THEN, I LOST MY GRIP ON A BIG WAD OF PAPERS THAT HAD SLID OUT OF THE OPEN TOP OF THE BENCH. WHEN THE PILE HIT THE FLOOR, IN SUCH A PROVIDENTIAL WAY, A LONG LOST DOCUMENT SUDDENLY PRESENTED ITSELF. I HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FILE FOR TWO YEARS. SUZANNE HAD PUT IT IN THE BENCH WHEN IT WAS USED FOR PLAYING OUR PUMP ORGAN, HERE AT THE SEMI SPIRITUAL CABIN WE CALL BIRCH HOLLOW. WHEN WE DECIDED TO USE A PROPER ORGAN STOOL, WE PUT THE BENCH AND CONTENTS INTO STORAGE FOR AWHILE. AS GOD IS MY WITNESS, I THOUGHT THERE WERE JUST OLD MUSIC SHEETS INSIDE. SO AFTER ALL THIS TIME, WE WERE RE-CONNECTED WITH A PORTION OF SUZANNE'S FAMILY HISTORY……IN THE HANDWRITING OF HER GRANDFATHER, JOHN SHEA.
WHEN SUZANNE'S FAMILY'S ESTATE WAS SETTLED, FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF HER FATHER, WE ACQUIRED THIS DOCUMENT ACCIDENTALLY IN FACT. WE KEPT SOME OLD ACCOUNTING BOOKS OF THE FAMILY MARINA, AT WINDERMERE, SO THAT ANDREW AND ROBERT (OUR SONS) WOULD HAVE SOME HARD EVIDENCE OF THE CONNECTION THEY HAD WITH THE BOAT INDUSTRY IN MUSKOKA. INSIDE THE ACCOUNTING PAGES, WAS A COLLECTION OF NEATLY WRITTEN PAGES, DATING BACK TO THE YEAR 1892. IT WAS IDENTIFIED AS A SHORT STORY, AS PART OF A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT, IN THE UFFORD AREA OF THE PRESENT TOWNSHIP OF MUSKOKA LAKES, WHERE THE SHEA FAMILY HAD SETTLED AFTER COMING FROM IRELAND. SUZANNE HAD BEGUN TRANSCRIBING IT SEVERAL YEARS AGO, BUT GOT SIDETRACKED, AND THE DOCUMENT HAD BEEN STUFFED AWAY FOR SAFE KEEPING. BEING RE-UNITED NOW, WAS A BIT OF KARMA AND PROVIDENCE MIXING ABOUT FOR BOTH OF US…….AS I HAD JUST WRITTEN THE OPENING FOR THE MEMORIAL OF HUGH MACMILLAN, AND WE'D WONDERED ALOUD, ONLY A FEW DAYS EARLIER, ABOUT WHERE THE SHORT STORY HAD GOT TO…….AS IT WAS NEEDED FOR OUR FAMILY HISTORY JOURNALS, SHE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY BUILDING FOR EACH OF OUR SONS. SO THE FACT I DECIDED TO WORK IN MY ARCHIVES JUMBLE THAT NIGHT, AND THEN SUZANNE'S FAILURE TO WALK FORWARD, CAUSED ME TO LOSE MY GRIP ON THE BENCH, (THAT HER FATHER HAD BUILT), THUSLY SPILLED THE GOD-SENT CONTENTS, REUNITING US TO A FAMILY HEIRLOOM. THIS KIND OF STUFF HAPPENS AROUND HERE ALL THE TIME, SO WE'RE USED TO THE COINCIDENCES HISTORY INSPIRES AND REPEATS FOR OUR MUTUAL BENEFIT.
THE 1892 SHORT STORY, WRITTEN BY JOHN SHEA, WILL BE PUBLISHED HERE BEGINNING ON MONDAY. IT'S A WONDERFUL MUSKOKA BASED STORY. I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S ENTIRELY ORIGINAL, OR BASED ON ANOTHER FAMILIAR STORY, OTHER THAN TO SAY SUZANNE'S GRANDFATHER WAS AN ENTIRELY HONEST, TRUSTWORTHY AND RELIABLE CHAP, WHO PROBABLY CREATED THE STORY FROM HIS OWN EXPERIENCES IN THE WILDS OF THE MUSKOKA FRONTIER; STILL VERY MUCH IN ITS PIONEERING YEARS WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG LAD. JOHN SHEA WAS A FARMER AND CLERK FOR THE TOWNSHIP IN HIS ELDER YEARS, AND HIS FARMHOUSE WAS INHERITED BY HIS DAUGHTER ADA SUZANNE'S AUNT," AND I REMEMBER SPENDING MANY ENJOYABLE HOURS WITH ADA, JACK AND FAMILY, IN THAT NEAT LITTLE HOMESTEAD BORDERED BY THE HILLS, VALLEYS ANFD GREEN, GREEN PASTURES, OF THE THREE MILE LAKE NEIGHBORHOOD. WE HAVE A PAINTING OF JOHN SHEA IN OUR LIVING ROOM, AND I'M GOING TO GET SON ROBERT TO TAKE A DIGITAL IMAGE TO RUN WITH MONDAY'S COLUMN. IT WAS A GOOD FEELING TO FINALLY RETRIEVE THIS FAMILY HISTORY, WHICH IS IMPORTANT TO SUZANNE, ESPECIALLY FOR BOTH BOYS……SO THAT THEY KNOW THEIR PIONEER CONNECTION TO THE DISTRICT OF MUSKOKA. I'M A SOUTHERNER FROM THE SEMI WILDS OF 1960'S BURLINGTON, ONTARIO……SO I'M LIVING VICARIOUSLY THROUGH THE SHEA FAMILY CHRONICLE, TO CLAIM MY OWN MUSKOKA ANCESTRY.
SO PLEASE JOIN ME ON MONDAY, FOR A RE-TELLING OF JOHN SHEA'S WILDERNESS TALE, WRITTEN IN VICTORIAN TIMES, ABOUT A STILL SPARSELY POPULATED, WILD FRONTIER REGION.
I WHISPERED A LITTLE THANKS TO MY OLD PAPER-SLEUTH MATE, HUGH MACMILLAN, WHO CONTINUES TO INSPIRE ME DAILY, ABOUT THE REAL TRIUMPHS OF THE HISTORIAN, IN SITUATIONS JUST LIKE THIS…….ANOTHER BIT OF HISTORY SAVED FROM THE GARBAGE BIN BY ARCHIVISTS WHO NEVER SAY NEVER!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING FOR TODAY'S BLOG. HOPE TO SEE YOU DOWN AT GULL LAKE ROTARY PARK, FOR THE SUNDAY "MUSIC ON THE BARGE" CONCERT. REMEMBER NEXT SUNDAY IS THE ANNUAL "GOOD BROTHERS" VISIT TO THE BARGE……AND THIS ATTRACTS A HUGE CROWD TO THE SHORE OF GULL LAKE. IT'S A GRAVENHURST TRADITION, TO WELCOME THIS MUSIC HALL OF FAME BACK GROUP TO OUR TOWN. HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT!
