A WILD NEWS DAY IN THE WORLD - A CRAZ,Y WILD DAY HERE IN GRAVENHURST, ONTARIO - FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS
A PLANE CRASH IN SAN FRANCISCO! A TRAIN DERAILMENT AND FIRE IN QUEBEC! A SMALL AIRCRAFT CRASH IN MIDHURST! AND INNOCENT SCHOOL KIDS SHOT BY TERRORISTS! NOTHING TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT HERE, EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THERE WERE SURVIVORS IN THE PLANE CRASH AND IN THE VICINITY OF THE DERAILMENT, BUT MAYBE NOT SO LUCKY FOR KIDS AND A HOLY WAR RAGING OVERSEAS. IT WAS A SAD DAY ON THE WORLD FRONT, EVEN IN EGYPT WHERE PEACE RIDES THE RAZOR'S EDGE EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY. IT MAKES US APPRECIATE THE LIFE AND TIMES OF OUR SMALL TOWN EVEN MORE.
MUSKOKA PALES IN COMPARISON WITH ALL THE OTHER BREAKING NEWS. BUT IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE SIGHT HERE IN GRAVENHURST, AS THE MAJOR BOAT EVENT AT THE WHARF BROUGHT IN A HUGE CROWD, THAT WAS DEFINITELY SHARED WITH THE MAIN STREET, AND THE OTHER COMMERCIAL PODS IN OUR COMMUNITY. IT TOOK ME A HALF HOUR TO GET OUT OF THE CAR, ON MUSKOKA ROAD, THIS AFTERNOON. I HAVE A STIFF LEG, AND I NEED THE CAR DOOR FULLY OPEN, TO NAVIGATE MY WAY CLEAR TO THE ASPHALT. IT WAS A BUSY DAY FOR THE STORE, AND HONESTLY, FROM THE MOMENT WE OPENED, WE ONLY GOT A FEW MINUTES ALL DAY TO SIT AND HAVE A COLD DRINK. NO COMPLAINING HERE FOLKS. THIS IS WHAT RETAILERS WAIT FOR FROM THE END OF OCTOBER. SO BRING IT ON. THE BOYS HAVE THEIR FIRST TRIAL-RUN COFFEE HOUSE TONIGHT, WITH A LOCAL GROUP PLAYING IN OUR BACK RECREATIONAL ROOM, AT THE STORE, ON MUSKOKA ROAD; WITH ABOUT THIRTY INVITED GUESTS, JUST TO SEE IF IT WORKS…..HOW IT SOUNDS AS A SMALL VENUE, AND IF IT IS A WORTHWHILE VENUE FOR SMALL GROUPS IN THE FUTURE……MOSTLY OF THE ACOUSTIC GUITAR KIND. WE WERE ALL UP AT DAWN TO GET READY FOR SOME OF THE MAJOR FLEA MARKETS AND YARD SALES IN THE MORNING, SO BY TIME THE EVENING VENUE IS OVER, THE BOYS I'M SURE, WILL BE GLAD THEY LEFT THE OPERA HOUSE…..TO PURSUE THEIR OWN ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS. IF THEY HAD BEEN INVOLVED WITH STAFFING THIS NEW THEATRE PROJECT, AT THE OPERA HOUSE, WE WOULD HAVE LOST A LOT OF BUSINESS TIME THAT'S FOR SURE. IN FACT, I THINK THEY WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THEMSELVES TO SICKNESS, WITH THE OVER-TIME, AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RUNNING THEIR SHOP. THE BOYS MADE THE RIGHT DECISION TO MOVE ON, AND AS IT TURNS OUT…..ENJOY DOING THEIR OWN THING.
OUT ON THE HUSTINGS THIS MORNING, IT WAS JUST AS WILD AND CRAZY AS I'VE EVER SEEN IT…..THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. MAYBE MORE SO. AS FAR AS BEING WORTH THE EFFORT….BY GOLLY, YOU BET YOUR LIFE. AT THE LAST YARD SALE WE WENT TO, IN TOWN, SUZANNE CAME BACK TO THE CAR (I STAYED WITH THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE BURDEN OF TRAFFIC AROUND US), TO ASK ME ABOUT A SILVER TEA POT, SHE HAD NOTICED AT THE SALE, WITH HALLMARKS ON THE BOTTOM, FOR THE RIDICULOUS PRICE OF FIFTEEN DOLLARS. AS SOON AS SHE DESCRIBED IT, MY KNEE-JERK REACTION WAS….."MY GOD WOMAN, ARE YOU CRAZY. PLEASE, PLEASE GO BACK AND BUY THAT TEA POT." SO SHE DID, AND WHEN SHE CAME INTO VIEW, WITH THIS GORGEOUS SILVER POT WITH ITS ORIGINAL FINIAL (A BEAUTIFUL FULL PETALED FLOWER), I KNEW BY THE LINES AND THE BONE RINGS, THAT IT WAS A PIECE DATING BACK TO THE 1830'S. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE WE HAVE SOLD NUMEROUS FROM THIS PERIOD, AND ALL FOR CONSIDERABLE PROFIT. THIS WAS THE KIND OF FIND, THAT MAKES EVERY MILE, EVERY TEASPOON OF GAS, A GOOD AND POSITIVE INVESTMENT IN BUSINESS VALUATION. THE ANTIQUE VALUE OF THE TEA POT? ABOUT TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY AS AN INVESTMENT PIECE. THE RETAIL PRICE WOULD BE MUCH LOWER OF COURSE. LATER IN THE DAY, AT A LOCAL SECOND HAND SHOP, I WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE A RATHER BEAT UP HIGH BOY DRESSER, WITH THREE SMALL DRAWERS AT THE TOP, WITH FOUR BELOW, AND HAND CRAFTED DOVE-TAILING ON THE DRAWERS, PUTTING IT TO AROUND THE SAME PERIOD OF THE SILVER TEA POT…..CIRCA 1825-35. IT TOOK US TEN MINUTES, ONCE BACK AT THE SHOP, TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE TEA POT, IN A GUIDE BOOK, AND ABOUT THE SAME TIME FOR THE DRESSER, WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE FROM NOVA SCOTIA. IT HAS SOME DAMAGE BUT ACCORDING TO THE CORRESPONDING PHOTOGRAPH OF A SISTER PIECE, IT WOULD BE AN EASY RESTORATION. I WILL HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS TO ACCOMPANY A FUTURE BLOG ON THESE TWO PIECES.
WE GOT LOTS OF OLD BOOKS ON CANADIAN ART, COOKBOOKS, VINTAGE VINYL, TWO VINTAGE BLACK TABLE PHONES FROM THE 1960'S, (FOR OUR NOSTALGIA ROOM), AND SO MANY COLLECTABLES I COULDN'T POSSIBLY ITEMIZE THEM AT THIS POINT. THEY'RE STILL PACKED IN BOXES. WE LOVED THE ROTARY SPONSORED SALE FOR THE CAMBODIAN SCHOOL PROJECT, AT THE GRAVENHURST SENIOR CITIZENS CENTRE, WHICH WAS JAM-PACKED FROM THE MOMENT IT OPENED. IT'S ON AGAIN TOMORROW MORNING, AT THE CENTRE, IF YOU'RE ROAMING AROUND WITH NOTHING TO DO. WE GOT SOME NICE PIECES HERE, AND THE FOLKS WERE WONDERFULLY ACCOMMODATING…..AND IT WAS A FRIENDLY, INTERESTING, NEIGHBORHOOD EVENT FOR A GOOD CAUSE. IT'S THE KIND EVENT OF EVENT THAT GRAVENHURST HOST VERY WELL…..ALL OF THE TIME. ONE OF OUR GREATEST ASSETS IN THIS TOWN, WITHOUT A DOUBT, IS THE CAVALRY OF VOLUNTEERS, IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE, FOR ALL WORTHWHILE CAUSES. IF THIS DOESN'T GIVE YOU A WARM AND FUZZY FEELING ABOUT YOUR HOMETOWN…..NOTHING WILL. THANKS FOR JOINING TODAY'S SHORT BLOG. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE SUNDAY NIGHT "MUSIC ON THE BARGE" CONCERT, WITH ELVIS.
