Music on the Barge – Sunday, July 21st – 7:30 p.m. – The Beckett Family
Music on the Barge, Gull Lake Rotary Park, Gravenhurst will be presenting The Becket Family on Sunday, July 21st commencing at 7:30 p.m.
“The show was one of those that only the multi-talented Beckett's can present. Three generations of this incredibly gifted family get your feet stomping and your heart warming in time with the music from their fiddles” -Owen Sound, Sun Times
Three generations of The Beckett Family have entertained audiences at fairs, old tyme dances, theatre shows, fundraisers and festivals across Ontario. They have opened for a variety of acts, including the Barra McNeils, Natalie McMaster, Ashley McIssac, and were the special guests at the Carmen Manitoba Fiddle Festival, the International Plowing Matches and the annual Summerfolk Festival. The group includes Tyler and Linsey playing fiddle, as well as a variety of other instruments, their father John on bass and vocal’s and their grandfather Stan, who is a well-respected fiddler in the Owen Sound area.
Playing music in a family environment has allowed Linsey and Tyler to value the tradition of old tyme fiddle music, as well as nurture their own musical styles. In recent years, Linsey and Tyler have performed on numerous stages across North America, Europe and Asia, delighting audiences with their toe-tapping fiddle styles. The duo have performed at a wide array of events, including the Canada Day Celebrations in Ottawa for the CBC, Fiddles of the World and the World Youth Day Celebrations in Toronto. Tyler and Linsey are also two time Canadian duet fiddle champions and three time Ontario duet champions. Tyler and Linsey started touring with the Don Messer Jubilee Tribute Show in 2001, where together they performed over 200 shows across Canada. They have both had the opportunity to tour with CCMA and DCMA award winning country group, South Mountain.
Since graduating from Business Honours Administration in 2009, Tyler has worked with several musical artists, including award winning bluegrass group, The Chapman’s. Tyler has also established himself as a valued multi-instrumentalist, playing with Jason McCoy on a recent Canadian Service Tour to Afghanistan, and performing with CCMA winners Jason Blaine and Tara Oram. Along with his busy music career, Tyler has enhanced his career path and has joined SunLife Financial in Owen Sound, where he specializes in Insurance and Investments.
Linsey has completed her degree of Geography and Music at Wilfrid Laurier University, and performs regularly with a variety of musical groups. In 2009, Linsey began working with the international string production, Bowfire. Her involvement in Bowfire has led to many exciting opportunities, such as performances with the Houston, Calgary and Colorado Symphonies, Sean Connery’s 80th Birthday celebration in the Bahamas, and on the runway of New York Fashion Week’s Dressed to Kilt. Linsey continues to freelance, perform and record with a variety of traditional fiddle, country and contemporary acts.

JUST SOME NOTES IN PASSING BEFORE I DO!
WE STARTED AT SEVEN THIS MORNING, COVERING THE SMALL BUT INTERESTING ARRAY OF LOCAL, TWO-TOWN YARDS SALES, AND ONE LARGE COMMUNITY FLEA MARKET, ON THE SITE OF THE FORMER DURA PLANT, IN BRACEBRIDGE. THERE WERE ABOUT FIFTY BOOTHS, BUT THERE WAS ONLY ONE TRULY ENCHANTED VENDOR, WHO BROUGHT ALONG THE KIND OF TREASURES THAT MAKE FOLKS LIKE US TINGLE (NOT TINKLE, ALTHOUGH IT WAS THE KIND OF EXCITEMENT THAT INSPIRES SUCH THINGS). I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP AN 1840 TO 1860 PRIMITIVE PINE COBBLER'S BENCH…..OF MUSEUM QUALITY, A TOY TIN SEWING MACHINE, MADE IN THE BRITISH ZONE OF GERMANY, OBVIOUSLY MANUFACTURED SHORTLY AFTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR, FIVE IRONS (THAT TO USE, WERE HEATED ON THE WOODSTOVE), A COUPLE OF GREAT TURN OF THE CENTURY BASKETS, A BOOT JACK (SCRAPER) STAMPED "THE RED LION INN - ESTABLISHED 1858," SOME VINTAGE SEWING COLLECTABLES, 1930'S PERIOD PHOTOGRAPHS, AND SEVERAL NEAT COTTAGE LAMPS…..FOR OUR COTTAGER CUSTOMERS. SUZANNE GOT A HALF DOZEN VINTAGE COOKBOOKS, AND I FOUND SOME INTERESTING REGIONAL HISTORIES. THIS IS WHAT OFTEN HAPPENS, AND WHY IT DOES PAY TO GET OUT ON THE ROAD EARLY, ON YARD SALE SATURDAYS. LAST WEEK, SUZANNE FOUND AN 1825-30 SILVER TEA POT, I GOT AN 1830'S EAST COAST (NEW BRUNSWICK) TALL BOY DRESSER, AND NOW I RETURN FROM THE YARD SALE ADVENTURE TODAY, WITH A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE COBBLER'S BENCH. ASKING PRICES? FABULOUS!
SUZANNE'S COOKERY NOOKERY HAS TAKEN OFF. IF A BUSINESS HAD WINGS, THIS SUCKER WOULD BE IN FULL FLIGHT. IT'S TAKEN ALL THE YEAR'S OF OUR MARRIAGE, TO ACCUMULATE THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE COLLECTION, BUT BY GOLLY, FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF JULY, SUZANNE HAS BEEN SELLING LOTS OF VINTAGE COOKBOOKS, AND ALREADY HELPING OUT WITH SOME MINOR RESEARCH, FOR ELUSIVE RECIPES, FOR CUSTOMERS WHO REMEMBERED A CERTAIN DISH OR DESERT FROM TRIPS TO GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE. FRED SCHULZ HAS EVEN OFFERED US A FABULOUS RECIPE FOR A DESERT, FROM HIS MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER, THAT SUZANNE IS GOING TO MAKE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I DON'T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF ME NOW, BUT IT SOUNDS TANTALIZING. FOR A GUY ON A DIET, THIS RECIPE - COOKERY THING IS GOING TO DRIVE ME NUTS.
WE HAVE ESTABLISHED A DONOR BOOK, FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE OFFERED US OLD COOKBOOKS AND HANDWRITTEN RECIPES FOR OUR RESOURCE COLLECTION. WE HAVE BEEN PROMISED MANY MORE BOOKS, SO WHAT WE DECIDED TO DO, WAS SET UP A DONOR BOOK, TO ACKNOWLEDGE ALL THE PREVIOUS OWNERS, WHO USED AND ENJOYED THESE COOKBOOKS IN THE PAST, SO THAT WE CAN SHOW THE BOOK TO OTHER COOKERY FANATICS, AND RESOURCE USERS. WHAT WE HAVE ALSO ESTABLISHED, IS AN ACCOMMODATION FOR DONATIONS OF COOKBOOK COLLECTIONS, IN MEMORY OF FORMER OWNERS, FAMILY MEMBERS, GRANDMOTHERS, MOTHERS, AUNTS AND COUSINS, AS PART OF OUR PERMANENT RESOURCES……WHICH WE HOPE WILL BE ACTIVELY USED IN THE FUTURE, AS THE ARCHIVES CONTINUES TO GROW. WE ALSO ARE INTERESTED IN BUYING COLLECTIONS AS WELL. THE IDEA HERE, IS TO STOP POSSESSORS OF THESE COOKBOOKS, FROM THROWING THEM OUT OR PUTTING THEM IN THE RECYCLING BINS. WE WANT THEM. PLEASE.
WHEN YOU START OUT ON A PROJECT OF THIS SIZE AND POTENTIAL, NO MATTER HOW YOU PREPARE FOR THE GROWTH, AND SPIN-OFF, THERE IS ALWAYS AN UNDERESTIMATION OF THE SPEED IN WHICH IT ALL COMES TOGETHER. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A BAD IDEA TO START THE COOKERY NOOKERY IN THE PEAK SUMMER MONTHS, BUT WE THOUGHT IT WOULD ALLOW OUR SUMMER VISITORS TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH A NEW GRAVENHURST RESOURCE AND SERVICE. THE ONLY NEGATIVE, IS THAT WE ARE BOTH RUN OFF OUR FEET, TENDING THE NORMAL DAY TO DAY TRAFFIC, AND THEN THE FOLKS LOOKING TO EXPLORE OUR COOKERY ARCHIVES. WE'RE A LITTLE SLOW GETTING THIS ALL OFF THE GROUND, WHILE CUSTOMERS STACK UP AT THE COUNTER. HEY, WE'RE NOT COMPLAINING. JUST THAT WE HATE BEING DISORGANIZED, AND THIS IS WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO SORT OUT QUICKLY. WE DIDN'T THINK THIS WAS GOING TO TAKE OFF QUITE LIKE IT HAS. SUZANNE HAS LOTS OF COOKBOOK ORDERS PENCILLED INTO HER BOOK, ALONG WITH QUITE A FEW PHONE NUMBERS, OF CUSTOMERS WISHING REGULAR ONLINE UPDATES OF NEW ARRIVALS OF "OLD" AND "OUT OF PRINT" COOKBOOKS. SO WE'RE NOT KIDDING. THE OLD COOKBOOK MARKET IS HALE AND HARDY, AND NOW WE'RE SCARED OF OVER-SELLING OUR COLLECTION. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? WHAT A GREAT THING TO WORRY ABOUT……SELLING OUT!
THE IDEA OF THE COOKERY NOOKERY WAS SIMPLE. WORK AT SOMETHING YOU KNOW A LOT ABOUT. I KNOW QUITE A BIT ABOUT ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES, AND I'VE BEEN WRITING ABOUT THEM SINCE THE SPRING OF 1978, WHEN MY FIRST COLUMN APPEARED IN THE BRACEBRIDGE EXAMINER. SUZANNE HAS BEEN AN AVID COLLECTOR FOR MOST OF HER LIFE, BUT SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A JUNIOR PARTNER IN OUR FAMILY BUSINESS. BUT SHE'S BEEN GAINING ON ME FOR SOME TIME. NOW SHE'S MAKING THE BIG FINDS AND I'M LICKING MY WOUNDS. HAVING THE STUDENT KICK THE TUTOR'S ASS HURTS THE OLD EGO. BUT WHAT WE DECIDED, LAST CHRISTMAS, WHEN SUZANNE FINALLY DECIDED TO RETIRE FROM HER 31 YEARS AS A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER, WE BOTH KICKED AROUND THE IDEA OF PUTTING OUR LARGE COOKERY COLLECTION UP FRONT, AS A SELF SUPPORTING BUSINESS. THIS WOULD GIVE HER SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I DO, AS AN ANTIQUE DEALER….YET WITH MY BACKGROUND IN OLD AND RARE BOOKS, I COULD PLAY A MINOR ROLE IN THE REGULAR HUNT AND GATHER. THIS APPEALED TO HER, AND THE PLAN WAS TO MAKE IT AS FREE-STANDING AS POSSIBLE, SUCH THAT IF THE BOYS EVER GOT TIRED OF HAVING US WORKING FROM THE SAME BUILDING, THE COOKERY NOOKERY, AFTER SOME WARM UP YEARS, COULD BE RE-LOCATED AS A GOING-CONCERN BUSINESS, AND RESOURCE CENTRE, WITHOUT WHAT SHE CALLS THE "BURDEN OF OLD FURNITURE." THAT HURTS. IN THE ANTIQUE TRADE, BELIEVE ME, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PLAY TWO OR THREE SHOTS AHEAD, TO BORROW FROM THE STRATEGY OF POOL LEGEND, MINNESOTA FATS. IN ORDER TO CUSHION WITH DIVERSITY, YOU CAN'T REALLY GET TOO COMFORTABLE, BECAUSE THE MARKET CHANGES SO RAPIDLY THESE DAYS…..FAR FASTER THAN I'M USED TO, FROM MY EARLY DAYS AS AN ANTIQUE APPRENTICE. I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE AT ALL, NOT HAVING A BROAD (WILD ARRAY) OF OLD PIECES, FROM BOOKS, TO PRIMITIVES, VINTAGE GLASS, TO PAINTINGS, AND EVERY COLLECTABLE IN BETWEEN. IT'S WORKING DANDY RIGHT NOW, AND WE HAVE SOLD HUNDREDS OF PIECES IN THE LAST TWO DAYS, THAT PROVE MY POINT. I WOULDN'T FEEL RIGHT WITHOUT ALL THE OUTRIGGERS KEEPING OUR SALES BALANCED. I KNOW DEALERS WHO SPECIALIZE SO HEAVILY, THEY LEAVE THEMSELVES VULNERABLE. I REMEMBER TELLING AN OLD BOOK DEALER FRIEND, THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO DIVERSIFY HIS INVENTORY, TO INCLUDE OTHER COLLECTABLE PIECES, IF HE WANTED TO STAY IN BUSINESS. I TRIED TO HELP HIM COME UP WITH A PLAN TO OFFER A RANGE OF ANTIQUES TO INFILL BETWEEN THE STACKS OF BOOKS, AND SOME SMALL, AFFORDABLE COLLECTABLES TO ACCOMMODATE THE TRENDS OF THE DAY. HE WOULDN'T LISTEN. THIS ISN'T ALL THAT RARE, TO FIND A STUBBORN DEALER, WHO PREFERS TO GO DOWN WITH THE SHIP, RATHER THAN ADOPT PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO STAY AFLOAT IN STORMY SEAS. AS FAR AS THE ECONOMY FACED BY ANTIQUE DEALERS DAILY, STORMY SEAS ARE PRETTY STANDARD FARE…..SO YES, TO SURVIVE, DEPENDS ON HOW GOOD YOU ARE KEEPING THE WATER ON THE OUTSIDE WHERE IT BELONGS. FOR US, YOU JUST KEEP ROLLING WITH THE WAVES, AND OCCASIONALLY THROW-UP THE SAILS, AND TURN-ABOUT ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN YOUR DISCIPLINE, BUT A NEW COURSE JUST THE SAME. IT'S THE ANTIQUE SHOP DYNAMIC, THAT COULD BE A UNIVERSITY COURSE ON ITS OWN.
I HAVE ACTUALLY BECOME MORE INTERESTED IN RENEWING MY INTEREST IN VINTAGE, OUT OF PRINT AND RARE BOOKS; BUT I'M SCARED TO DEATH ABOUT THE BIBLIOMANIA PART, THAT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY. FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS NOW, I'VE BEEN MOVING AWAY FROM BEING AN OLD BOOK DEALER, BECAUSE MY COLLECTION ALMOST STRANGLED THE ENTIRE FAMILY. I ONCE HAD A COLLECTION OF ABOUT 40,000 BOOKS, AND A TUTOR, BY THE NAME OF DAVE BROWN, OF HAMILTON, WHO HAD 100,000 BOOKS JAMMED INTO HIS BUNGALOW. HE WAS MY MENTOR. AND HE WAS A BIBLIOMANIAC OF THE HIGHEST ORDER. HAVING WRITTEN HIS BIOGRAPHY, I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, WHEN I SAY DAVE WAS OBSESSED BY BOOKS……SO MANY BOOKS, THAT THEY ACTUALLY WERE KEEPING THE FIRST FLOOR OF BOOKS, FROM ARRIVING UNCEREMONIOUSLY IN THE BASEMENT. THE BOOKS WERE PILED FROM THE CEMENT FLOOR OF THE BASEMENT, TO THE FLOOR JOIST ABOVE. I WAS NEVER THIS BAD, BUT CLOSE. AND IN THE PAST THREE YEARS, I'VE BEEN GETTING RID OF LOTS OF BOOKS, EVEN DONATING QUITE A FEW TO LOCAL THRIFT SHOPS AS PART OF MY THERAPY. I HAVE BEEN SELLING LOTS OF MY PRIVATE COLLECTION THROUGH OUR SHOP, AND THE REASON I DON'T HAVE THEM ORGANIZED BY SUBJECT…..AS YOU WOULD FIND IN ANY OTHER OLD BOOK STORE IN THE GOOD OLD WORLD, IS THAT IT WOULD SEEM TOO MUCH LIKE I'M STARTING A BOOK SHOP…..WHEN I REALLY DON'T WANT TO, BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSES I KNOW COME NEXT. AS A PROBLEM DRINKER IN THE PAST, HEY, IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE SAME DEAL. I GOT A RUSH OUT OF A SNOOT-FULL OF BOOZE, AND CHEERING ON THE STRIPPER! I CAN GET BUZZED AT AN ESTATE BOOK SALE, BUT I MIGHT HAVE TO SETTLE FOR A GLASS OF POP INSTEAD OF THE STRIPPER OR A JUG OF DRAFT BEER. FIGURE THAT IF I KEEP IT ALL VERY RANDOM, AND SIMPLY OFFER TITLES PILED HERE AND THERE, I WON'T GET BITTEN BY THE BUG…….THAT WOULD MAKE ME WANT TO DRIVE THOUSANDS OF KILOMETRES A MONTH, TO SEEK OUT EVERY BOOK VENUE IN THE REGION, AND BEYOND, JUST LIKE I DID WITH MY YOUNG FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS. DAD WAS A BOOK MANIAC. YET I'VE ENJOYED MY IMMERSION BACK INTO COLLECTING AND SELLING OLD BOOKS, ON A LIMITED, FINANCIALLY MINIMAL BASIS, FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR CUSTOMERS. THEY WILL OFTEN SAY TO SUZANNE, ABOUT THE GOOD TASTE SHE HAS IN OLD BOOKS, AND WHEN DID SHE START COLLECTING. SHE'S A LITTLE RELUCTANT TO CREDIT ME WITH THE COLLECTION, BECAUSE THE VERY NEXT STEP FOR THE BIBLIOPHILE, IS TO BEG A CONVERSATION WITH THE KINDRED SPIRIT LURKING BEHIND THE SCENES. BIBLIOPHILES ATTACH TO OTHER BIBLIOPHILES LIKE A FUNGUS, AND ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER……AND PRETTY SOON I'VE FOUND ANOTHER MENTOR LIKE DAVE BROWN, TO GET ME ALL GASSED UP, TO CARRY ON WITH MY BIBLIOMANIA LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS…….WHEN OUR HOUSE LOOKED LIKE A LIBRARY STORAGE FACILITY…..NOT A FAMILY HOME. SO TO GET MY FEET WET, ONCE AGAIN, IN A CONSERVATIVE APPROACH TO BOOK COLLECTING, I'M NOW WORKING AS SUZANNE'S "COOKBOOK HOUND," AND SO FAR, SO GOOD. I HAVEN'T HAD THIS URGE TO BINGE SHOP FOR BOOKS. MAYBE I'M MORE ABSOLVED OF THE MANIA THAN I FIRST THOUGHT. BUT I AM COLLECTING MORE BOOKS FOR THE SHOP THESE DAYS, AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, I'M REAL GOOD AT IT……WHICH SUZANNE IS HAPPY ABOUT, WHEN MY ABILITY IS USED FOR THE CAUSE OF GOOD, AND BUSINESS PROFIT, BUT REALLY SCARY, WHEN PURSUED WITH A DRUNKARD'S VENGEANCE TO DRINK EVERY LAST DROP OF BOOZE IN TOWN. I AM A MAN POSSESSED, WHEN I HUNT BOOKS, AND THOSE WHO KNOW ME, OR HAVE SEEN ME AT BOOK SALES, REALIZE A MANIA WHEN IT BLOOMS IN FRONT OF THEM.
MY OBJECTIVE NOW, IS TO SECURE AUTOGRAPHED AND INSCRIBED BOOKS, AND SO FAR, I'VE GOT SEVERAL SHELVES IN THE STORE OF SOME OF MY PRIZE FINDS…..WHICH ARE PRETTY SUBSTANTIAL, CONSIDERING I'VE REALLY ONLY BEEN HUNTING THEM SPECIFICALLY FOR A YEAR AND A HALF. PREVIOUS TO THIS, MY OLD BOOKS WERE MOSTLY IN THE FIELD BEST DESCRIBED AS CANADIANA, AMERICANA, AND SPECIFICALLY REGIONAL ONTARIO HISTORIES, INCLUDING MUSKOKA BOOKS. BUT NOW I'M ON THE LOOSE AGAIN, AND SUZANNE GETS THAT NERVOUS STARE, WHEN SHE SEES ME COMING INTO THE SHOP WITH ANOTHER BIG BOX OF RECENT FINDS, TO FILL OUR BOOK SHELVES. SHE KNOWS THAT NOT ONLY WILL I FILL THE SHELVES, BUT HER ROOM AS WELL. I'VE PROBABLY SECURED THREE QUARTERS OF HER COOKBOOK INVENTORY, SO BELIEVE ME, I'M DEFINITELY IN MY GROOVE, HOUND DOGGING FOR OLD AND RARE BOOKS. SO I'LL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE, ON HOW I'M EITHER ABLE TO SIDESTEP THE MANIA PART, AND DO IT ALL FOR THE GOOD OF OUR BUSINESS, OR IF, ON THE OTHER HAND, I COME HOME AT NIGHTS SMELLING LIKE CHEAP PERFUME AND REALLY OLD PAPER. I HAD A LOT OF CRONIES IN THE OLD BOOK BUSINESS, AND FALLING IN WITH THEM AGAIN, WOULD BE LIKE A SENIOR SIGNING UP TO BE PART OF THE MOTORCYCLE GANG OF ONCE…….THAT NEARLY CAUSED THE DEATH OF YOU THE FIRST TIME AROUND. SUZANNE I THINK, WORRIES THAT I WILL GO BACK TO MY OLD WAYS, WHEN I USED TO SNEAK BOOKS INTO THE HOUSE WHEN SHE WASN'T HOME, AND WITHIN A YEAR OR SO, HAVE SET OUR PROGRESS AS MINIMALIST CONVERTS, BACK TWO FULL YEARS. I THINK I WILL BE FINE THIS TIME AROUND. I DON'T WANT TO BE CONSIDERED AN OLD BOOK DEALER EVER AGAIN. I JUST WANT TO BE AN ANTIQUE DEALER WITH OUTRIGGERS TO SURVIVE WHATEVER THE ECONOMY THROWS AT US. NOTHING MORE. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE SUZANNE GETS WHAT SHE NEEDS, IN COOK BOOK INVENTORY…….BUT ONE OF MY BOOK HUSTLING COLLEAGUES SAID THAT, "IT'S LIKE BRINGING IN AN NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE GOALIE, TO BACK UP THE LOCAL PEE WEES." I WAS FLATTERED FOR A MOMENT, THAT I WAS CONSIDERED A RINGER AND A BOOK HOUND. I THEN TRIED TO TELL HIM THAT I'D JUST BE HAPPY PLAYING FOR THOSE PEE WEES, AND DOING IT FOR FUN THIS TIME AROUND.
THANKS FOR JOINING THIS BLOG TODAY. SUZANNE AND I ARE GOING OUT FOR A LITTLE MOTOR TRIP, AROUND THE LAKE, IN PREPARATION FOR ANOTHER WORKING SUNDAY…..IN THE GOOD OLD MIUSKOKA TOURIST SEASON…..OF WHICH I ONLY HOPE WE WILL SURVIVE. GET OUT THERE AND ENJOY THE GREAT WEATHER AND WONDERFUL SCENERY. BUT DO DRIVE CAREFULLY. THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF ACCIDENTS AND A LOT OF SIRENS OUT THERE…….AND THAT'S JUST AWFUL, TO HAVE A HOLIDAY END THIS WAY.
